SKULPTURENPARK WUPPERTAL / GERMANY
FROM 8th APRIL to 9th OCTOBER 2016

Plasters made by sculptors are often seen as a means to an end, rather than as works in their own right. Henry Moore, too, initially destroyed many plasters to prevent further casts being made once a bronze edition was complete. Over time, however, Moore increasingly retained his plasters, appreciating them as the original sculptures.

TONY CRAGG / RAVELLO FESTIVAL 2014
RAVELLO SALERNO / ITALIA
FROM 21 JUNE TO 31 OCTOBER 2014

The exhibition, curated by Flavio Arensi, links the spaces of the Villa and the Auditorium Niemeyer in a richly evocative series of sculptures that enter into a dialogue with one of the most extraordinary beauty spots in Italy, in what can surely be considered a Festival tradition. Six sculptures will be juxtaposed with the flowing lines conceived by the Brazilian architect of genius on the concourse in front of the Auditorium, while in the Villa the works will be set up in the gardens, in the ancient kitchen range with its Norman feel, and in the former Chapel. The work to be shown in this latter venue is called Congregation and was conceived as a homage to the sea, recalling ancient wooden vessels studded with hundreds of steel hooks. Cragg's bronze sculptures illustrate his activity from the 1990s right up to his most recent realisations and constitute some of his major achievements.
In setting up this interplay between the plastic arts, music and the landscape, the Festival has once again adopted a winning formula for pursuing an active enquiry into the ethos and languages of contemporary art. The invitation to one of the major figures on the international scene highlights Ravello's role as a key point of reference for contemporary sculpture in Italy. The exhibition catalogue will be published by Arte'm.

Olafur Eliasson. Lightopia

Vitra Museum, Weil am Rhein, Germany. From 28 September till 9 March 2014

New lighting technologies are currently bringing about profound changes in the domain of artificial lighting. This development is the subject of the Vitra Design Museum’s exhibition «Lightopia». It is the first comprehensive showcase on the topic of lighting design, featuring examples from the realms of art, design, architecture and many other disciplines. »Lightopia« encompasses roughly 300 works, including numerous iconic artefacts from the Vitra Design Museum’s lighting collection – which has thus far never been presented to the public – with works by Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Achille Castiglioni, Gino Sarfatti and Ingo Maurer.

Other objects demonstrate the performative power of light, like the famous »Light-Space Modulator « by László Moholy-Nagy, or the spectacular reconstruction of a discothèque from the year 1968, made entirely out of translucent plexiglass. The primary focus of the exhibition is on works by contemporary designers and artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Troika, Chris Fraser, Front Design, Daan Roosegaarde, Joris Laarman, realities:united and mischer’traxler, who illustrate the scope

of new possibilities for designing with light. http://www.design-museum.de/en/exhibitions/detailseiten/lightopia.html

Tony Cragg. Heydar Aliyev Art Center

Baku, Azerbaijan. From 9 April 2014

Amazing to visit! By Zaha Hadid.

As part of the former Soviet Union, the urbanism and architecture of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan on the Western coast of the Caspian Sea, was heavily influenced by the planning of that era. Since its independence in 1991, Azerbaijan has invested heavily in modernising and developing Baku’s infrastructure and architecture, departing from its legacy of normative Soviet Modernism.

Zaha Hadid Architects was appointed as design architects of the Heydar Aliyev Center following a competition in 2007. The Center, designed to become the primary building for the nation’s cultural programs, breaks from the rigid and often monumental Soviet architecture that is so prevalent in Baku, aspiring instead to express the sensibilities of Azeri culture and the optimism of a nation that looks to the future.

Tony Cragg, Sculptors at the Dusseldorf Art Academy from 1945 to the present, K20 Dusseldorf
Till 28 July 2013

http://www.kunstsammlung.de
It was the sculptor Tony Cragg – professor at the Academy for many years, and currently its director as well – who gave the impulse for this extraordinary survey exhibition from an insider‘s perspective. The selection of works by 53 artists, many of them produced in the context of the Academy itself, form an astonishing and impressive panorama of internationally acclaimed modern and contemporary sculpture that brings together familiar works with unknown or rediscovered ones. This chronological overview, which occupies three galleries
of the K20, spans the spectrum from the historic positions of the postwar years all the way to the present day. The show demonstrates that precisely the multiplicity of artistic attitudes and concerns have been decisive in shaping teaching activities at the Academy.
List of the exhibited artists: Joseph Beuys, Karl Bobek, Ralf Brög, Hede Bühl, Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon, Jürgen Drescher, Bogomir Ecker, Katharina Fritsch, Isa Genzken, Martin Gostner, Thomas Grünfeld, Erwin Heerich, Georg Herold, Martin Honert, Jörg Immendorff, Magdalena Jetelová, Irmin Kamp, Hubert Kiecol, Luise Kimme, Harald Klingelhöller, Imi Knoebel, Jannis Kounellis, Gereon Krebber, Norbert Kricke, Bernd Lohaus, Markus Lüpertz, Heinz Mack, Ewald Mataré, Rita McBride, Christian Megert, Reinhard Mucha, Wilhelm Mundt, Nam June Paik, A.R. Till Augustus 2013

The works originate from a private collection, were created between 1984 and 2010
and are intended as permanent loans for the museum. The works range from the political “Flag” which can be assigned to Cragg’s early oeuvre, to the current amorphous bronze and steel sculptures, sometimes weighing several tons, such as “The Runner”,
“Cast Glances“ and “Mixed Feelings”.
The artworks are displayed in the street gallery, one of the most prominent spaces in the museum that can be viewed both from inside and from the outside, and were set up
by Tony Cragg himself in order to highlight the interplay with the space.
Their affect will radiate in a highly visible way within and beyond the museum.

Over the past 45 years, Italian artist Giuseppe Penone has examined our relationship to nature.
For the latest Bloomberg Commission, the Whitechapel Gallery unveils a twelve metre bronze
cast of a tree, with a radiant gold-leaf interior, which will spread across the columned gallery.
The tree is carefully balanced on its branches and divided into sections to allow visitors to
move between the separate elements. The work contrasts with the urban environment
surrounding the Gallery, highlighting hidden nature within the city. It also references the
Whitechapel Gallery’s Arts and Crafts architecture which features the Tree of Life motif
on its façade. The installation is accompanied by a year-long programme of talks and events
exploring the rich relationship between nature and the city.

Giuseppe Penone , Château de Versailles

Interview / Figaro Culture / 01/03/12
